Division Master

A division is a second way to slice the company, cutting across branches — a product line, a business unit, a project. A branch is where something happened; a division is which part of the business it belongs to.

1Step by step, the first time #

  1. Press Add (F3) and name the division.
  2. Leave Applies to branches empty if it exists everywhere. Pick branches only if it genuinely belongs to some. (ERP edition only; Professional has one branch and does not show this field.)
  3. Save (F5) , then add the rest the same way.
  4. Switch on Track Division in General Settings once they are all in. Until then divisions save here but appear nowhere else.
  5. Set opening balances by division on the ledger and product masters, which offer a division-wise opening once tracking is on.

2Applies to branches, and why empty means all #

The branch list is stored as a comma-separated list of branch ids, and the code that reads it asks: is the list empty, or does it contain this branch?

  • Nothing picked — stored as NULL, and the division applies to every branch, including ones created later.
  • Some branches picked — the division is offered on those branches only.
  • There is no way to say "no branches at all", and that is deliberate: a division belonging to nothing would be invisible everywhere without ever saying why.
  • Deleting a branch that a division names does not rewrite the list. The name simply stops resolving, and the division reads as applying to one fewer branch.

3Why is a pick-list empty? #

  • Applies to branches lists every branch in this company. If it is empty, no branches exist yet — create them in the Branch master first.
  • Divisions missing on an entry screen? Track Division is off, or the division is marked Inactive, or it names branches and you are working in a different one.

4Rules and integrity #

  • Names are unique.
  • A used division cannot be deleted — the database refuses it and the message says so. Mark it Inactive instead.
  • Permission triggers can refuse a save or delete outright.
  • Deleting a division also clears its document links (database cleanup trigger).
  • Every problem is reported at once , as a numbered list.

5Shortcut keys #

  • F2 Find · F3 Add · F4 Modify · F5 Save
  • Esc cancels the edit; in view mode it closes the page.

This is the help InvoiceNET® ERP shows beside the Division Master screen. Whether you have the screen depends on the modules of your licence and the rights your administrator has given you.
