1Purpose #
Templates are keyed by name and product, so the name is what lets the same idea — "this is the cutting specification" — be recognised across a catalogue of products that each need slightly different parameters.
Nothing here decides which parameters appear. That is the Item Parameter Template master's job; this page only supplies the names it can choose from.
2Step by step #
The template NAME is the stable identity; its editable content lives in versions on the template master.
- Press Add (F3) and name the template — Steel bar QC .
- Press Save (F5) ; then build the template's parameter list on the Item Parameter Templates master.
3How to use it #
- The page opens with a blank row ready to key. Enter moves from cell to cell, and Enter off the last cell of the last row starts another.
- Add Name (F3) appends a row. The bin icon removes a row; it is deleted when you Save.
- Save (F5) writes every changed row after a confirmation. Refresh (F2) re-reads and discards unsaved edits.
- The Used By column counts the products this name is currently applied to. Click the count to see exactly which products they are. A name in use cannot be deleted, so the list tells you what to clear first.
- Retire a name you no longer want offered by turning Inactive on rather than deleting it — existing templates keep working.
4Field details #
- Template Name — required and unique. What the Item Parameter Template master shows, and what appears beside captured values in reporting.
- Description — optional free text saying what the template is for.
- Used By — read-only. How many products currently carry a template under this name; clicking the count opens the list of those products.
- Inactive — retires the name without deleting it. Templates already built keep working; the name simply stops being offered for new ones.
- State — read-only; what Save will do with the row.
5Shortcut keys #
- F2 — Refresh: re-read the list, discarding unsaved edits.
- F3 — Add Name.
- F5 — Save (opens the confirmation).
- Esc — close the confirmation or an open dialog.
- Enter — move to the next cell; off the last cell of the last row it starts a new row and puts the caret in it.
- Tab — move to the next cell without the new-row behaviour.
Shortcuts belong to whichever copy of the page has focus, so a second tab of this page does not steal them.
6Why is a pick-list empty? #
- This page has no pick-lists — every cell is typed or toggled.
- The list it feeds is the Template Name field of the Item Parameter Template master. If that comes up empty, nothing has been created here yet: add a name, save, and it appears there.
- A name marked Inactive is deliberately withheld from that pick-list. If a name you expect is missing, check the Inactive switch here before assuming it was deleted.
7Rules and integrity #
- Template names are unique. The duplicate is refused before saving, and refused again by the server if it somehow gets through.
- A name applied to any product cannot be deleted — the refusal says how many. Delete those template documents first, or retire the name with the Inactive switch instead.
- Rows are saved individually by state, so an untouched row is never rewritten — it keeps its identity and its created-by / created-on stamps. Editing a row stamps modified-by / modified-on.
- Renaming is safe: templates point at the row's identity, not at its text, so a rename follows through everywhere at once.
- The blank row waiting at the bottom is scaffolding: it is never saved and never counts as an incomplete row.
