Item Category Master

An Item Category is the finest classification level, nested under an optional parent Item Sub-Group . Choose (Not Applicable) when a category has no parent sub-group.

1How to work in this page #

  1. Find (F2): search by name, sub-group, or description.
  2. Add (F3): create a new category. Cursor lands on Name.
  3. Modify (F4): edit the loaded category.
  4. Delete: remove the current category (view mode), with confirmation.
  5. Save (F5): commit the add / modify. Name is required and must be unique.
  6. + button: create a parent sub-group inline without leaving this page.

2Step by step #

Categories are a second, independent axis of product classification alongside groups — use them when reports need a cut that the group tree does not give.

  1. Press Add (F3) , name the category, save with F5 .
  2. Add Sub Categories on their master if a second level is wanted.
  3. Products pick category and sub category on the Product master's classification block.

3Why is the Sub-Group list empty? #

The parent Sub-Group list is filled from the Item Sub-Group master, so it stays empty until at least one sub-group has been created there. A sub-group in turn needs a parent Item Group, so if you are starting from scratch the order is Item Group first, then Item Sub-Group, then this category.

You do not have to leave the page: use the + button next to the Sub-Group box to create the parent sub-group inline, and it becomes selectable immediately. Leave the box on (Not Applicable) if the category has no parent sub-group.

4Rules and integrity #

  • The category name must be unique; a duplicate is refused before saving.
  • The parent sub-group is optional — categories can sit directly under nothing.
  • Categories are chosen on products and on item sub-categories. Deleting a category that is still in use can leave those records pointing at a missing parent, so retire rather than delete a category that has been used.

This is the help InvoiceNET® ERP shows beside the Item Category Master screen. Whether you have the screen depends on the modules of your licence and the rights your administrator has given you.
