Item Sub-Category Master

An Item Sub-Category is the deepest classification level, nested under a required parent Item Category . Use the + beside the category picker to create a parent category without leaving this page.

1How to work in this page #

  1. Find (F2): search by name, category, or description.
  2. Add (F3): create a new sub-category. Cursor lands on Name.
  3. Modify (F4): edit the loaded sub-category.
  4. Delete: remove the current sub-category (view mode), with confirmation.
  5. Save (F5): commit the add / modify. Name and Category are required; Name must be unique.
  6. + button: create a parent category inline.

2Step by step #

A sub category refines a category, exactly as sub groups refine groups.

  1. Press Add (F3) , name the sub category and pick its parent category.
  2. Press Save (F5) and confirm; F3 for the next.

3Why is the Category list empty? #

The parent Category list is filled from the Item Category master, so it stays empty until at least one category has been created there. Every sub-category must sit under a category, so you cannot save one until a category exists.

Use the + button beside the Category box to create the parent category inline; it becomes selectable straight away.

4Rules and integrity #

  • A parent category is mandatory — the sub-category cannot be saved without one.
  • The sub-category name must be unique; a duplicate is refused before saving.
  • Sub-categories are chosen on products. Deleting one that is still in use can leave those products pointing at a missing sub-category, so retire rather than delete a sub-category that has been used.

This is the help InvoiceNET® ERP shows beside the Item Sub-Category Master screen. Whether you have the screen depends on the modules of your licence and the rights your administrator has given you.
