1What is UOM? #
UOM means Unit of Measure . It defines how a product or service quantity is recorded and displayed.
Common examples are Nos , Box , Kg , Litre , Meter , and Set .
Each item should use a meaningful unit so stock, pricing, tax calculation, invoice printouts, e-invoice, and e-way bill data remain consistent.
2Step by step #
Units are the first inventory master to seed — a product cannot be saved without one.
- Press Add (F3) and type the unit's short form into the name — NOS , KGS , MTR — the way it should print on invoices.
- Add a description if the short form is not obvious.
- Press Save (F5) and confirm; F3 for the next. A typical company needs under a dozen.
- Conversions between units (a BOX of 12 NOS) are NOT set here — they are per product, on the Product master's Alternative Units action.
3Purpose and where it is used #
- Sales Transactions: quantity entry, rate per unit, invoice print, and sales reports.
- Purchase Transactions: purchase quantity, inward entry, vendor bills, and purchase reports.
- Inventory and Stock: stock movement, item master references, stock statements, and valuation views.
- Compliance Documents: e-invoice and e-way bill unit names when those fields are maintained here.
4How to work in this page #
- Find (F2): open the search dialog, search by unit name or description, optionally use column filter menus, select a row, then press OK .
- Add (F3): create a new unit. The cursor moves to Unit Name automatically.
- Modify (F4): edit the currently loaded unit. Existing values are loaded into the form for correction.
- Delete: remove the current unit only in view mode. A confirmation dialog is shown before deletion.
- Save (F5): commit the current add or modify operation to the database through the Unit master controller.
- Cancel (Esc): discard the current add or modify operation and return to view mode.
- E-Invoice / E-Way Bill Unit Name: maintain alternate names here when statutory integrations require a specific unit text.
5Rules and integrity #
- The unit name must be unique; a duplicate is refused before saving.
- Units are used on products, on alternate-unit conversions, and to suggest the unit names on HSN / SAC codes. Deleting a unit that is still in use can strand those records, so retire an obsolete unit rather than deleting it.
