Putaway Rules

Stock that comes in has to end up in a bin. These rules say who finds that bin - the system by itself, the system as a suggestion, or the operator - and what a bin must pass to be accepted.

1What this screen is for #

  • Menu path: Warehouse Management > Setup > Putaway Rules. Route /warehouse/putaway-rules .
  • One set of rules a storage space. A storage space gets them when it is switched to the WMS on the Warehouse master, with the delivered values.
  • The box on the left says in words what the form on the right will do.

2The three ways to work #

  • The system suggests, the operator scans (as delivered). Stock waits in the receiving bin. On Putaway the operator sees the bins the rules name, and scans the bin and the material.
  • The operator finds a free bin . Nothing is suggested. The operator puts the stock in any free bin and scans the bin and the material.
  • Automatic allocation . Nobody scans. As a voucher is saved the system puts the stock in the bins the rules name, and takes stock going out from the bins that hold it. Quick, but the bins then show where stock should be, not where someone confirmed it is.

3The rules #

  • The item's pick bin - up to the most it keeps there (Item Warehouse Settings). Fills the place orders are picked from first.
  • A bin already holding the same item and batch , with room - keeps an item together.
  • An empty bin in a zone of the item's putaway class - Fast, Slow, Bulk, Cold, Hazardous: the class of the item must match the class of the zone.
  • Any empty bin that passes the checks - the last resort.
  • Use the arrows to change the order, the switch to leave a rule out.

4The refinements #

  • Heavy low, light high - a heavy item is offered level 1 first, then 2, and so on.
  • Fast movers near dispatch - a count class A item gets the bins earliest in walking order, a C item the latest.
  • Reserve near the pick bin - the empty bin closest in walking order to the item's pick bin.
  • Best fit - the smallest bin that takes the quantity, so large bins stay free for large lots.
  • Expiry kept apart - for items picked by expiry, a batch is not put with another batch.
  • One trip - the Putaway list is sorted in the walking order of the suggested bins.

5Toolbar & keyboard #

  • Modify (F3) , Save (F5) , Cancel (Esc) ; Save and Cancel ask to confirm, with OK focused. After a save the page stays on the storage space, in view mode.
  • Esc in view mode closes the page. There is no Add and no Delete.
  • Who may change the rules: the Alter right on the object WMS - Storage Space Under The WMS , in User Manager.

6If something does not work #

Modify (F3) is greyed out / "... is not run by the WMS. Switch it on in the block Run by the WMS of the Warehouse master, then set its putaway rules."
Why
Putaway rules belong to a storage space run by the WMS; the one picked is not.
What to do
Lay the storage space out, name its default bins and switch it on, on the Warehouse master.
"Automatic allocation needs at least one rule switched on - with none, the system has no bin to choose and everything stays in the receiving bin."
Why
Automatic allocation places stock by the rules, and none is on.
What to do
Switch at least one rule on, or switch Automatic allocation off.
"Switch on at least one rule, or let the operator choose the bin - with no rule the system has nothing to suggest."
Why
The Putaway screen is set to suggest a bin, and no rule is on to name one.
What to do
Switch a rule on, or pick The operator finds a free bin.
"Enter the weight of a unit, in kg, from which an item counts as heavy - above 0, up to 100,000."
Why
Heavy low, light high is on and needs the weight that makes an item heavy.
What to do
Give the weight - 20 kg as delivered - or switch the refinement off.
"Pick how the bin is found: suggested by the system, or chosen by the operator." / "Pick Off, Warn or Stop for the check on ...." / "'...' is not a putaway rule." / "'...' is not a putaway refinement."
Why
The request carried a value the lists do not offer - it did not come from this screen as it stands.
What to do
Reload the page and save again.
"Someone else changed the putaway rules of this storage space after you opened them. They have been left as they saved them - make your change again on top of theirs."
Why
Somebody saved the rules - or the storage space's WMS settings on the Warehouse master - while they were open here.
What to do
The page has loaded their version. Press Modify, make your change again and save.
"You do not hold the right to change the putaway rules. An administrator grants it in User Manager, Masters tab, on the object WMS - Storage Space Under The WMS (Alter)."
Why
Changing the rules asks for the Alter right on the storage space's WMS settings.
What to do
An administrator ticks Alter on WMS - Storage Space Under The WMS for you in User Manager.
"Putaway rules of ... saved." / "... Automatic allocation is ON: vouchers saved from now on are placed by the rules."
Why
The rules are saved and apply from the next voucher and the next putaway.
What to do
Nothing to do. Stock already waiting in the receiving bin stays there until it is put away on Putaway.
The rules here read differently from the order on WMS Settings
Why
WMS Settings (#291) gives the order for a storage space that has never saved its own. Once a storage space is saved here, it keeps its own order.
What to do
Change the order here for this storage space. The company's order goes on applying to the storage spaces not yet saved.
A rule is on but its bin is never suggested
Why
The rule finds nothing to name: the item has no pick bin, or its pick bin is at its most to keep; nothing holds the item yet; no zone carries the item's putaway class; a bin's mixing rule or item list excludes the item.
What to do
Check Item Warehouse Settings (pick bin, most to keep, putaway class) and the zone's putaway class on Warehouse Layout.
Heavy items are still offered high levels
Why
The item has no weight on the Product master, weighs less than Heavy from, or the bins carry no level (they were added one by one, not from a pattern).
What to do
Give the item its weight; lower Heavy from; bins made from a pattern carry aisle, level and position.

This is the help InvoiceNET® ERP shows beside the Putaway Rules screen. Whether you have the screen depends on the modules of your licence and the rights your administrator has given you.
