Wave Planner

Orders go to the floor in waves . Tick the open orders that go together, build the wave, release it: the bins are allocated oldest stock first and one pick task per line is raised on My Tasks. The picker scans the bin and the item and confirms; the stock waits in the dispatch bin under the order's number until the Delivery Note is made from the order.

1What this screen is for #

  • Menu path: Warehouse Management > Outbound > Wave Planner. Route /warehouse/waves .
  • An order is awaiting release when its type has Use WMS bins on in Voucher Manager (a Sales Order, a Production Order, an order of StockType Order-IN) and a goods line of it still asks for stock in the storage space: ordered, less delivered, less what is already staged in the dispatch bin, less what open pick tasks hold. The same reckoning the Picking screen uses, so the two never offer the same stock twice.
  • Can ship says what the bins could give the order now, on its own: In full , Part with the quantity, or None , and why (hold the pointer over a short line). Two ticked orders that want the same stock are settled at release, in the order ticked.
  • Build wave makes a draft that holds nothing. Release allocates: for each line, the batch with the earliest expiry first, then the bin that received the stock first, then the item's pick bin, then the walking order; only Active bins, never the dispatch bin, a QC hold, Damage, Returns, Packing or Dispatch bin, never an expired batch; a line that names a batch takes that batch only. Where the storage space tracks pallets a whole pallet that fits is one task. The allocation is held on the bin balance (allocated, so no other wave or move counts on it) and one Pick task per line and bin is raised.
  • A wave stands as Released , then Picking once a pick is confirmed, then Picked when no task is open. A wave with nothing picked can be cancelled : its tasks go and the holds are let go; the orders are offered to the next wave.
  • Mode only orders the pick list: By order prints the orders one after the other, each in walking order; Batch prints one list in walking order. On My Tasks the picks are always in walking order.

2Step by step #

  1. Pick the storage space . Narrow the orders by date or text if the list is long.
  2. Click the orders that go together to tick them - the ones that can ship in full, as a rule. Tick all shown ticks every order listed.
  3. Press Build wave (F3) , choose By order or Batch, add a note, leave Release at once on, and confirm. The wave is built and released in one go; the answer names the pick tasks raised and any line short of stock.
  4. Or untick Release at once to keep a draft: pick it on the right and press Release (F5) when the floor is ready.
  5. Watch the wave on the right: picks done, quantity picked, lines that could not be filled. Pick list prints the tasks in walking order for a picker who works on paper.
  6. The pickers work the tasks on My Tasks . Once the wave is Picked , make the Delivery Note from the order on the voucher screen: it takes the staged stock from the dispatch bin. (The Dispatch desk that posts it comes with the next part of this phase.)

3Toolbar & keyboard #

  • Refresh (F2) reads the orders and waves again; Enter in the find box does the same.
  • Build wave (F3) with the ticked orders; Release (F5) the draft wave picked on the right. Both confirm first (OK focused).
  • Cancel wave asks for a reason; it is refused once a pick is confirmed.
  • Pick list opens the wave's tasks in walking order with a Print button.
  • Esc closes a dialog; with none open, the page.

4If something does not work #

"You do not hold the right to open the Wave planner. An administrator grants it in User Manager, Masters tab, on the object WMS - Waves (View)." / "... build a wave ... (Create)" / "... release a wave ... (Create)" / "... cancel a wave ... (Delete)"
Why
The planner opens with the View right on WMS - Waves; building and releasing need Create; cancelling needs Delete.
What to do
An administrator ticks the right on WMS - Waves for you in User Manager.
"This storage space is not run by the WMS - nothing is picked from bins here." / the storage space is not in the list
Why
A wave picks from bins; only a storage space switched to the WMS has them.
What to do
Switch the storage space on in the block Run by the WMS of the Warehouse master.
"... has no dispatch bin - set one in the block Run by the WMS of the Warehouse master. Picked stock waits there."
Why
A pick stages the stock in the storage space's dispatch bin, and none is set.
What to do
Set the dispatch bin on the Warehouse master (a bin of the Dispatch kind, as a rule).
No order has a goods line still to pick here
Why
An order is offered when its voucher type has Use WMS bins on in Voucher Manager (a Sales Order, a Production Order, or an order of StockType Order-IN) and a goods line of it still asks for stock in this storage space: ordered, less delivered, less what is staged in a dispatch bin, less what open pick tasks hold. An order booked to another storage space is offered there; one with no storage space of its own is offered in every storage space open to its branch.
What to do
Check the order's type in Voucher Manager (Use WMS Bins), the order's storage space, and whether it is already in an open wave or picked.
"In wave W-..." beside an order, grey
Why
The order is already in a wave that is still open (Draft, Released or Picking); an order is in one wave at a time.
What to do
Work or cancel that wave first.
"Part: n of m" / "None" beside an order
Why
What the bins could give the order now, on its own, by the allocation rule: free stock (on hand less allocated) in Active bins that are not the dispatch bin nor a QC hold, Damage, Returns, Packing or Dispatch bin, of a batch that has not expired; a line that names a batch takes that batch only. Hold the pointer over a short line for the reason.
What to do
Release the order anyway (the lines short of stock stay pending on it) or wait for the receipt. Two ticked orders that want the same stock are settled at release, in the order ticked.
"Tick at least one order to build a wave." / "Tick at least one order."
Why
A wave is built from the orders ticked on the left.
What to do
Click the orders to tick them, then Build wave (F3).
"Pick by Order or as a Batch - no other way is built." / "The note can't exceed 500 characters."
Why
The build dialog's values.
What to do
Choose Order or Batch; shorten the note.
"Order ... has nothing left to pick in ... - open the planner again."
Why
Between the list and the build, the order was delivered, closed, picked or put in another wave.
What to do
Press Refresh (F2) and tick again.
"... is already in wave W-..., which is still open."
Why
An order is in one open wave at a time.
What to do
Work or cancel that wave first, or leave the order out.
"Wave W-... is ... - only a draft wave is released. Refresh the planner."
Why
Release is for a Draft wave; this one was released or cancelled meanwhile.
What to do
Press Refresh (F2).
"Nothing of wave W-...'s orders is left to pick in ... - they were delivered, closed or picked meanwhile. Cancel the wave."
Why
Between the draft and its release every line of its orders was delivered, closed or picked elsewhere.
What to do
Cancel the wave.
"Short of stock: ..." after a release / "No bin could give any of it: the wave has no work and may be cancelled."
Why
At release the rule found less free stock than the lines asked for; the lines short are listed with why (no bin holds it, expired, already allocated, less than asked). They stay pending on their orders and are offered to the next wave.
What to do
Receive or put away stock, or move it out of a bin that cannot be picked from, then release another wave for the rest. A wave with no task may be cancelled.
"The storage space is no longer run by the WMS, or has no dispatch bin."
Why
The Warehouse master changed between the draft and the release.
What to do
Set the storage space up again on the Warehouse master, then release.
"Say why the wave is cancelled - it is kept with it." / "The reason can't exceed 200 characters."
Why
Cancelling asks for a reason; it goes on the wave and on each task cancelled.
What to do
Type it and press Cancel this wave.
"Wave W-... is ... - it cannot be cancelled. Refresh the planner."
Why
Only a Draft, Released or Picking wave is cancelled; this one is Picked, Dispatched or already Cancelled.
What to do
Press Refresh (F2).
"Wave W-... has n pick(s) confirmed: ... already stands in the dispatch bin for its orders. Cancelling after picking needs approval and return-to-bin tasks, which are not built yet ..."
Why
Once a pick is confirmed the stock is staged for the order; the design holds such a cancel for approval and raises tasks to return the stock, which a later part builds.
What to do
Finish the wave; or bring the staged stock back to a bin with Move on Bin Stock (the Picking screen shows what stands at the dispatch dock) and let the orders be picked on a later wave.
"That wave no longer exists. Open the planner again."
Why
The list on the screen is older than the database.
What to do
Press Refresh (F2).
"The pick list could not be sent to the printer - ..."
Why
The browser refused the print window (a pop-up blocker, as a rule).
What to do
Allow pop-ups for this site and press Print again, or print the page with Ctrl+P.
